sort

kind作“種類、類別” 解時，是壹個普通的用法。sort作“種類、類別”解，與kind沒有大的區別。但應註意：①kind常用在比較正式的場合；②當對物體進行分類時，常用kind表示大類，用sort表示大類中的小類；③表示生物時常用kind，表示自然資源等常用sort。type作“型號、典型、範例”解，是壹個比較正式的用詞。如：Men’s blood can be divided into several types.（人的血型可分成好幾種。）它們的具體用法如下：1. 表示單數名詞，用a kind/sort of …“某種、壹種（不明確的東西）”；this kind/sort of …“這種”或that kind/sort of…“那種”, 這時它們之後的名詞都應是單數，但名詞前不加冠詞。例如：It was a kind/sort of animal with long ears and a short tail.（它是壹種長著長耳朵和短尾巴的動物。）He spoke with a kind/sort of foreign accent.（他說話帶有某種外國口音。）No one has ever been interested in this kind/sort of overcoat.（沒有人對這種大衣感興趣。）註意：a sort of/of a sort可以解釋為“有點是又不完全是”，帶有壹定的貶義。如：He is a sort of teacher. （他可以算是壹個教師。）They served a sort of coffee/coffee of a sort.（他們供應可以說是咖啡的東西。）2. 當表示復數名詞時，壹般不用these/those kind/sort of…，而應該用名詞(復數)+of this/that kind/sort。例如：Pencil-boxes of this kind/sort sell well.（這種鉛筆盒銷路很好。）Questions of that kind/sort are very difficult.（那類問題非常難。）3. 如果是問句，問“哪壹種……”，那要用What kind/sort of…，kind/sort前面不加冠詞，of之後可以是單數名詞，也可以是復數名詞；若名詞是單數，句中的動詞也應為單數；若名詞是復數，句中的動詞也應為復數。例如：What kind/sort of tree is this?（這是哪壹種樹？）What kind/sort of trees are these?（這些是什麽樹？）What kind/sort of a person is he? He is a generous man.（他是什麽樣的人？他很慷慨。）但是：①What kind of tree不同於What kind of a tree，前者問樹的種類，後者問這個樹怎麽樣。②What kind of a person和What sort of a person略有不同，前者正式，後者帶有貶義。4. 如果kind/sort of與數詞或不定代詞連用時，應用其復數形式。例如：There are twenty five kinds of flowers in my garden.（在我的花園裏有二十五種花。）All kinds of difficulties have to be overcome.（各種各樣的困難都必須被克服。）5. 當kind/sort of修飾形容詞、副詞、動詞時，解釋為“有點“。例如：I’m feeling kind/sort of tired.（我覺得有點累。）They kind/ sort of laughed at me. （他們有點嘲笑我。）
