外太空的英語為：the outer space。
太空（英語：Space），漢語字典解釋是極高的天空。位於瑞士日內瓦的國際航空聯合會定義了大氣層與太空的界線：以離地球海平面100千米（約62英裏）的高度為分界線，稱為卡門線。卡門線以美國科學家西奧多·馮·卡門的名字命名。
地球物理學家將大氣空間（或稱為空氣空間）分為5層。對流層，海平面至10千米。對流層有濃密的空氣，稱為濃密大氣層。濃密大氣層隨高度增加，空氣越來越稀薄。平流層，10-40千米之間。中間層，40~80千米。80-370千米為熱層，屬於電離層的下部。
