菜鳥，形容壹個人上網很“菜”，用來比喻網絡新手，英文中的對應詞是newbie；
大蝦，諧音自大俠，形容網絡高手，英文中的對應詞是knowbie，表示a knowledgeable and experienced Internet user.值得壹提的是這兩組詞在各自語言中都有比較壹致的相關性，中文中的“菜鳥”和“大蝦”戲謔成分較重，適合以文字體現，口語中廣泛流傳的可能性不大，而英文中的“newbie”和“knowbie”音節少，口語中發音簡單易懂，拼寫起來形象易記，含義上可以擴展到互聯網外的其他場合，具備廣泛的群眾基礎，已經出現在各大正式媒體中了。
“灌水”和“潛水”
論壇是網絡交際的重要載體，在這裏創造出來的網絡用語自然最多，最常見的非“灌水”和“潛水”莫屬。
中文裏的“灌水”壹詞形象生動，壹些人為了獲得積分在論壇裏反復留言，在回別人帖子的時候沒有做出交際性的評論，只是簡單的表示“同意”、“支持”，內容與主題無關，這種現象在英語中叫 bump，它在論壇裏是“頂”的意思：To bump a thread on an internet forum is to post a reply in order to raise the thread's profile by returning it to the top of the list of active threads. This is also called "necroposting". 這種“灌水”往往被認為是壹種垃圾留言（spam），被很多論壇禁止。
“潛水”指在論壇、聊天室等只瀏覽不發言的行為，這樣的人好似“潛水員”，永遠不浮出水面。“潛水”在英語中的對應詞是lurk：
