D·H·勞倫斯(David Herbert Lawrence, 1885—1930) 是英國現
代小說家, 其小說多以礦區生活為素材。勞倫斯認為機械文明扭曲
了人性, 摧毀了鄉村的自然之美, 主張讓人的本能得到充分發揮, 使
人性臻於完美。他註重對人物精神世界的細膩刻畫, 把富有詩意的
自然意象如彩虹、 百合等與人的心理活動相結合。請欣賞他的傑作
《兒子與情人》 中的幾個片段:
For a while she could not control her consciousness; mechanically she went over the
last scene, then over it again, certain phrases, certain moments coming each time like
a brand red-hot down on her soul; and each time she enacted again the past hour, each
time the brand came down at the same points, till the mark was burnt in, and the pain
burnt out, and at last she came to herself.
這段文字描寫懷有身孕的莫爾太太被醉酒的丈夫趕出家門後氣憤和痛苦的心情。mechani-
cally 意為 “機械地、 呆板地” , 與上句中 could not control her consciousness (不能控制思緒) 相照
應。went over 原指 “仔細檢查、 從頭到尾溫習” , 此處指莫爾太太回憶剛才吵架的情景。over it
[the last scene] again 與前文 mechanically相呼應, 說明她不由自主地又回想起剛才的情景, 無法
擺脫憤怒的情緒。為了形象地再現這種痛苦的程度, 勞倫斯用了壹個鮮明的比喻: 吵架的話語和
時刻就像熾熱的烙鐵( a brand red-hot)印在她心上。enact 原指 “扮演戲劇中的某壹個角色” , 此處
指她再次回憶剛才爭吵時的情景, 照應前文中的 could not control her consciousness 和 mechani-
cally。be burnt in 指傷痕已經深深地印在心裏; be burnt out 原指 “燒完” , 此處指痛苦化為壹縷青
煙, 只剩下空虛的心, 和 be burnt in 形成對照。
這段文字在結構方面還有兩點值得註意。首先, 這壹段由壹個長句組成, 恰如人氣憤時思緒
壹個接著壹個, 沒有任何間斷, 而且此時思緒往往是簡單機械的重復, over、 brand、 burnt 等關鍵詞
的重復就體現了這壹點。第二, 長句中前後呼應的結構與內容所描寫的意象相輔相成。could not
control her consciousness 與 mechanically相呼應, 而 went over 與 over it again 相呼應。分句中都用
each time 來引導, 層層深入地剖析了她痛苦的內心世界。請看譯文:

melted with her in the mixing-pot of moonlight, and she rested with the hills and lilies and
houses, all swum together in a kind of swoon.
這段文字描寫莫爾太太在自然的撫慰下漸漸忘掉傷痛, 融入周圍的美景之中。she did not
know what she thought 與前文 she could not control her consciousness(難以擺脫痛苦)不同, 說明她
