1、詞性不同
instead of是介詞短語，後接名詞或動名詞；instead是副詞，修飾動詞或句子。舉例如下：

2、用法不同
instead of可以獨立構成短語作狀語、同位語以及其他平行結構，語義明確；
he chose to help others instead of going home，與help others 並列。

instead只能修飾動詞或句子，語義不明確，由主句確定；
